Our Visit To Google Office
When people think about Google, they would probably think about cool office and free food amongst all others. This post is not about that.
Last month, we got invited to attend Google Cloud Tech Talk titled GCP (Google Cloud Platform) Differentiators for Cloud Professionals at the Google Singapore Developer Space. Situated in Mapletree Business City II, this 7,200 square feet workspace aims to connect developers around Singapore and Southeast Asia and helping them leverage on Google technologies and resources to advance their technical capabilities. What immediately caught our eyes was how visually appealing their office space is.
They were very concise with their presentations with the aim of getting straight to the point within 20 minutes per session. The topics included the followings:
- what are their advantages against other competitors,
- what technology used behind the scene,
- how security plays a critical role,
- why they think their solution is better and more scalable,
- their contribution to the open souce community through continuous enhancement namely Kubernetes,
- their startup initiatives to help startups like ourselves to grow and many more.
It is very informative in our opinion. Highlights of the events includes:
A Google employee demonstrated how fast Big Query could process huge amount of data while he tried to solve a randomized Rubik’s Cube. Big Query took slightly longer but it was still very fast for that amount of data.
Fun facts: Did you know that Rubik’s Cube is no more than 20 moves away to solve?
A panel discussion with speakers from Property Guru, Carousell, Chope, Ninja Van and Scoot regarding their experience using Google Cloud Platform and competitors, what made them decided to switch and what benefit have they gained from that experience.
Trivia question: What is the average number of cloud platforms used by the companies mentioned above?
Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) that enables your entire team of data scientists, analysts, and developers to automatically build and deploy state-of-the-art machine learning models on structured data at massively increased speed and scale.
Fun facts: Google did a machine learning model to analyse the type of clouds by feeding it with pictures of clouds. So the next time you upload an image of a cloud, Google most probably would be able to accurately predict the type of cloud in that picture.
Overall, we would recommend others to attend these sessions which are regularly conducted for the developer community. The least you could get out of it is to make new friends and expand your network. If you happen to see anyone of us during one of these sessions, feel free to say hi.
